  • For the majority of users, Ultra settings are unrealistic. Ultra settings in games are primarily included for future-proofing a game, and usually offer minimal visual increases for heavy performance impacts.
  • Run in Fullscreen. While this is less important than in the past, most games usually still perform better in Fullscreen mode.
  • Don't be afraid to use Adaptive Quality for Anti-Aliasing if you're having trouble reaching a 30 or 60fps target. This helps smooth out performance during GPU-heavy scenes, and it's difficult to notice the visual difference during normal gameplay.
  • AC Valhalla is the first entry in the series to run in DirectX-12, and is much less CPU-bound than previous entries. It's still demanding, and if your CPU has only 4 cores, it's probably best to only target 30fps. 60fps is best for users with 6 or more cores. Sure, you might be able to reach higher than 30fps, but it will be a juttery unpleasant experience for most users.
  • If your screen support Freesync or GSYNC, enable it. This will help hide occasional performance dips, and has less input lag than traditional VSYNC. Just make sure to disable VSYNC in-game!
  • Unless you're playing on an Ultrawide display, it's best to leave FoV on default settings. Increasing it can have a negative performance cost.

  • Shadows, Clouds, and Screenspace reflections are some of the most demanding settings. These should be the first settings you turn down if you're struggling to reach your performance target.
  • Motion-Blur has a minimal performance impact, and ultimately comes down to personal preference. Especially at lower framerates (30fps), it helps to create the illusion of motion, though.
  • Texture quality has almost no impact on performance, as long as you have enough VRAM (the in-game settings menu provides an estimate of VRAM usage. Note that this is not that same as GPU utilization). As long as you have enough VRAM, these should be left on High.
  • Depth of Field mostly affects cutscenes. It's a part of the look of the game, so unless you're really struggling, it's best left on at least medium
  • Make sure Windows and your Graphics Card Drivers are up to date! Close other programs in the background. Make sure your RAM is in dual channel mode if you have multiple sticks, and enable XMP mode.
  • Having your game on an SSD won't do much to improve performance, but will increase loading times and help to reduce occasional stutters associated with asset-streaming.
  • Remember, this is a game designed around 30fps. Some users will be able to run it at 60fps, and it will be a better overall gameplay experience. But it will still feel good at 30fps, it is designed around that. So don't feel too down if that's all your hardware can support.
