Content of the article: "This game is incredible"
I just started playing Odyssey three days ago at the urging of my buddies and wanted to share my experience thus far (I am about 18 hours in). My friends have been chirping at me to get this game for months, talking about it constantly and reminding me how much i’m missing out on every time we get together. I enjoyed the original AC game, revelations was ok but I couldn’t get into any of the other series titles I tried (2, Unity, Black Flag), i was reluctant to spend $40-60USD on a game i didn’t expect to enjoy. To be fair, I probably didn’t give all the games a fair chance in hindsight, but the gameplay and overall vibe just felt like a rehash of the first game to me. I quickly moved on to other titles i was more interested in.
This all changed with Odyssey. I found the game available 75% off on the xbox store and figured id scoop if for the price as it was low risk ~$15USD. My god, i was hooked immediately. Playing the tutorial as Leonidas at Thermopylae, the combat style was reminiscent of the Dynasty Warriors games I grew up with and felt similar enough, but also vastly improved from the previous AC titles. That tutorial felt like the perfect combination of AC and Dynasty Warriors with the tone and setting of 300 (the film).
As I have always been fascinated by the Ancient Greek and Roman worlds, cultures and history. This setting is for me personally, the absolute pinnacle of video game achievement. As a kid, I always imagined myself as a greek hoplite sailing around the region and taking part in epic sieges and naval battles, spending time mentally walking through the various city states. I have sunk hours of my life reading about conflicts like the battle of marathon, Thermopylae and the Peloponnesian War and picturing how it all must have looked in my head, the looks of soldiers, the ships the buildings and the mountains. I mean everything about the setting and ambiance of this game nails what i expect when i think of Greek culture.
The environment, the world and the people are riddled with intricate, little details which bring the game to life. I mean the first time i boarded my ship after meeting Barnabas (who is my favorite character), the crew starts fucking singing old greek sailing songs?! I was blown away. I got goosebumps the first time i docked the ship at night and the crew, continuing their song proceed to lie down on the deck and rest while gazing upon the stars. I couldn’t leave the boat for a solid 5 mins. I just sat there and enjoyed the song and the beautiful scenery with my men.
I still have a lot of playing to go and feel i am only scratching the surface of what is available in this game, but i can say with 100% certainty that this is one of the best experiences I have ever/will ever have with a video game. Bravo Ubisoft, you fucking nailed this one.
There are a ton of features I enjoy about this game which i haven’t touched on like the conquest battles and naval battles, but I think I’ve said enough. I would love to hear about similar experiences!
