I am a low behavior score player. I have been climbing, after years of toxicity, out of it. Important to note – I deserve to be in this low behavior pool. I like throw-y builds, like buying moonshards on AM/Jugg and daedalus, or other experimental/stupid things that I think might work. As a result, I have played badly in tons of games. I can also get very toxic when I'm tilted, so I naturally get reported. I am trying my hardest and have stopped being toxic to the absolute best of my ability, and have climbed from 2k up to the upper 5k where I sit now. I am terribly annoying to play with, and that is my own fault, and I own up to it. I am doing my best to repent and get better. Overcome personal struggles.
But as I have been playing in this low behavior pool, I have noticed a disturbing and saddening trend that is indicative of the behavior score system being flawed to the point of being broken. There are multiple new players in practically every game – not smurfs, genuine new players. And they have been mass reported into the low behavior score pool, where games for these newbies suffer as a result. This also seems to be unique – my girlfriend, who I frequently hang out with while she plays, almost never gets new players, and she has been at 10k since launch. It seems as if the vast majority of noobs are in low behavior score.
The worst part? Pretty much all of them are very friendly. I frequently teach these players how to use chat and they're incredibly supportive, nice, and have nothing but polite questions. They don't belong here, they're being reported for playing badly as a result of them being new.
This isn't counting the "New players", or smurfs, and the new players on the other team – in games with new players, the system actually does a good job of matching us against other new players, so low behavior score games are usually 3v3 or 4v4. There are also loads of players between level 10-20 that I didn't count, who also qualify as new, but aren't at the point of learning how to move and stuff – they're just unfamiliar with all items and heroes. For anyone who wants I can go back through and dredge all of those up.
I'm genuinely not exaggerating when I say that games are more often ruined/thrown by players who are learning what boots are than they are ruined by people breaking items or feeding. It's heartbreaking to watch entire teams dogpile these new players in the toxic behavior bracket, scaring these people off from DotA, a beautiful game. It's so sad to add these people after and tell them that it's okay and not their fault and watch them never launch dotA again, cus their 10th game ever they spent getting screamed at.
Something needs to change. Valve needs to hire people. Put in effort to a new player experience where smurfs are heavily lessened. Valve white knights are right that it can't be perfect, but it can be drastically improved – LoL and CSGO new players don't get skullfucked as hard as they do in DotA, nor are those games even nearly as toxic. Improvements must be made. There's no way this game will last like this.
