So this happened in my game and I'm not sure if I made the right call. Let me know what you guys think!
I allow the use of the Unearthed Arcana Class Feature Variants in my game and so one of my players chose to use the "Favored Foe" feature instead of Favored Enemy. The Favored Foe features states:
You can call on your bond with nature to mark a creature as your favored enemy for a time: you know the hunter’s mark spell, and Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for it. You can use it a certain number of times without expending a spell slot and without requiring concentration— a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. When you gain the Spellcasting feature at 2nd level, hunter’s mark doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.
Note how it doesn't require concentration. My ranger fell unconscious and rolled a couple death saves before his allies healed him up. Since this feature no longer makes the Hunter's Mark spell a concentration spell, could this mean that he can still use his bonus action to move the Hunter's Mark from one target to another after getting up from being incapacitated?
My ranger argued that he could, since the feature changes the spell itself from a concentration spell to a simple feature that he can use a few times a day. I, on the other hand, completely forgot that the Favored Foe feature specifically states that it doesn't require concentration and ruled that being incapacitated made him lose the connection he had with Hunter's Mark.
I know that I will adjust my house rulings when Tasha's comes out, but until then, how does my ruling sound? I understand that Unearthed Arcana is extremely experimental, which is why I strongly discourage against them at my table, but I also understand that it's fun to play around with.
TL;DR – Favored Foe from UA class feature variants makes Hunter's Mark no longer a concentration spell. Can this still be maintained after the player falls unconscious?
- Baldur’s gate 3 rework of Ranger is really good
- Please remove/rework Hunter’s Mark in Shadowlands
- Trying my hand at the Ranger
