Content of the article: "Illithid Pureblood – A new Homebrew race to explore"
There's a disappointing lack of character races with Int bonuses, and while the new race customization options in Tasha's solve some of that, I wanted to build a race with bigbrain power that goes well with a lot of the new Psionic options that have been made available. Thus, the Illithid Pureblood race was born.
The general idea is that some illithids became so obsessed with study and research that they strove to make themselves more human in appearance through scientific studies in areas like genetic modification and invasive surgeries. This allows them to move more easily among the general population, and expand their studies.

A newly-discovered race
The illithid purebloods are creatures hailing from illithid decent, who have undergone intense transformation to appear nearly human. This race has only recently been discovered, and not much is known about them. What we have gathered thus far has been catalogued here.
Illithid Purebloods, much like Aasimar, range in appearance greatly. Some of them are nearly indistinguishable from other humans, with smooth pale skin, hair of any color, and a distinct lack of tentacles around the mouth. Some may have a slight purple tint to their skin, which may feel rubbery to the touch, and their fingers are often longer and more delicate than those of 'normal' humans. Many will have bright-red eyes, lacking nearly any other pigment melanin in their iris. Others will have more normal looking eyes, although there is usually a bit of a reddish cast to the iris on even the most human-looking of these purebloods. This may cause their eyes to appear anywhere from bright red, to purple, or even shades of orange.
A Scientific Transformation
While the yuan-ti and their associated purebloods underwent their transformation through rituals and magics, the Illithid Purebloods are much more scientific and purposeful in their endeavors. Leaving nothing to chance–and leaving less to the gods–these creatures studied and experimented for generations, mutilating the bodies of their brothers and sisters, until they discovered the secrets to removing distinguishing characteristics. Notebooks gathered from their laboratories are filled with insane scribbles about things such as 'gene splicing', 'selective mutaiton', and 'somatic hybridization'–although our greatest scientists can understand very little of what they mean.
Roleplaying an Illithid Pureblood
Illithid Purebloods are cold and calculating, often placing logical decisions above any emotional decision. They are masters over their own mind, and are not easily fooled. Illithid Purebloods do not often feel emotions–and when they do, they are never swept away by them in the way that humans and other races often are. They are fascinated by the physiological changes that these races undergo in reaction to these emotions, and often find themselves analyzing others' reactions to situations instead of reacting to the situations themselves. This distinct lack of emotional reaction to most any situation can cause many other races to distrust the Illithid Purebloods, and to see them as strange, alien creatures.
Illithid Purebloods are scientists at heart, and are also often swept up in the study. They are always seeking knowledge. Perhaps your character is seeking to fill a gap in knowledge, or to discover a new secret. Maybe they are mingling with humans and other races to better understand emotional reactions and physiological reactions to them. Or perhaps they are simply curious and want to see what life is like now that they are not bound by the chains of appearing so physically alien.
Decide how you will react to other races, and especially how you may react to other illithids should you encounter them in your travels.
Illithid Pureblood Traits
Your Illithid Pureblood character — called a pureblood for short — has the following racial traits.
Ability Score Increase Your Intelligence score is increased by +2. You can increase one other ability score by +1. This +1 cannot be applied to intelligence.
Age Illithid Purebloods mature more rapidly than humans, although their mental faculties take longer to develop. This leads to Illithid Purebloods in fully grown humanoid bodies, with the minds of children. Little is known about the life expectancy of Illithid Purebloods.
Alignment Illithid Purebloods are mostly devoid of emotion and see others as subjects of study. They care little for law or chaos and are typically true neutral.
Size Illithid Purebloods match humans in average size and weight. Your size is Medium.
Speed Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Mind Sense Beginning at the third level, you have gained additional mastery over your psionic abilities, and can sense the minds of thinking creatures within 30' of you. This sense is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood. You cannot detect the thoughts of these creatures, or interact with them in any way, but you can gain a general sense of their location, distance from you, and a vague idea of their intelligence level (DMs discretion).
This Mind Sense requires Concentration, and if used in an Initiative situation, requires an Action to use.
Innate Spellcasting You know the message cantrip, and you can manipulate small objects with your mind. This telekinesis is functionally identical to mage hand, although no hand is present–seen or unseen. Starting at 3rd level, you can also cast suggestion with this trait. Once you cast it, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Mental Fortitude You have advantage on saving throws against Suggestion, Charm Person, Command, and other mind-affecting spells.
Languages You can speak, read, and write Common, Abyssal, and Draconic.
