Content of the article: "I’m thinking of making a new rule for clerics in my game. Need help."
I have a player who's playing a Grave cleric in my campaign and they I gave them a ring of chill touch, allowing them to treat it as a cleric cantrip to add their wisdom modifier to the damage roll. So I've been thinking about giving clerics that have potent spell casting, a roll to hit cantrip that's correlated to their respected domains. For example, I've decided to give the light domain clerics produce flame. As for peace and knowledge clerics I came up with something different.
For peace clerics I came up with a homebrew cantrip that they can use.
Illuminating Charge – Available to Peace Cleric Casting Time: 1 action Duration: 1 round Range: Self Components: V S M (A small capsule of Spring Water)
Make an attack against your opponent, a radiant light bursts from your palm. On a hit the target takes 1d8 radiant damage, The target must make a constitution saving throw on a success nothing happens, on a fail the holy energy illuminates the target up to a 5 foot radius of bright light, and 5 feet dim light outside. Allowing you and your allies advantage on attack rolls against said target, until the start of your next turn or when the target dies. If you hit another creature with the spell the light remains on the first target if you so choose, if not then the light immediately transfers to the new target having them make another constitution saving throw. The light can be dismissed outside of combat as a free action.
This spell's damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th Level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8)
Knowledge Clerics were a whole lot trickier. I was trying to come up with some sort of psychic damage cantrip. However, I always felt that psychic damage makes more sense on a intelligence or wisdom saving throw. So I thought maybe having them roll for a one or the homebrew cantrip would make more sense as their domain is associated with intelligence.
Knowledge Cleric Ring Roll (1d4):
Ray of Frost
(Arcana Clerics already get two wizard cantrips of their choice that they can treat as cleric cantrips. So I feel like they don't really need anything else.)
Please let me know what you think. If there's any improvements you would make, or any recommendations you have. It would be very helpful!
