I'm currently working on a Campaign set in a world where a great calamity occurred in the world several thousand years ago. It was an event so great that its aftermath is recorded in the history books of every major civilization and in the ruins of older ones. But the exact nature of the calamity is either unknown, or the details of each one contradicts one another. And what's more, there are growing signs that another calamity is set to occur. And now everyone is trying to figure out either how to prevent it or how to survive it.
I want my players to essentially encounter peoples with differing views on what caused the calamity, and because of these views, they swing far in the other direction thinking it might help them.
Some ideas off the top of my head are perhaps entire factions that view magical items as being the cause of the calamity, that at some point a small group of powerful mages created an item so strong that it caused it. And so they set out a-la brotherhood of steel like and confiscate as much magic items as they can.
Or a faction that views powerful magic casting as the cause of the calamity, and vow to kill powerful mages in the world. And a faction that thinks planar convergences caused the calamity and are trying to close or seal off any place where the planes intersect, trying to close off the material plane from the rest. And of course, some factions that view that lack of religion is the issue, and the opposite faction that views too much religion is the issue. And so on and so forth.
In truth, my end game is that the true cause of the calamity was an imbalance in the nature of things and of societies. And that because of the fears each faction has and how these fears fuel their worldview and conspiracy theories, it only serves to exacerbate the problem.
What I'd like help on is to get more ideas of these sorts of factions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
