Content of the article: "Order of Scribes: roast your enemies from afar. Probably one of the best abilities in the game."
I have seen very little discussion around Order of Scribes and how good it is. I am going to present an interaction using 6th level feature Manifest Mind that I think is extremely powerful, to the point that it might be too good. Disclaimer: I first learned about this interaction in a chat with Treantmonk.
TLDR: Order of scribes 6th level feature allows you to cast a spell in a way that allows a wizard to seriously harm enemies without them being able to do anything about it. Enemies will have no choice except to face your spells without knowing who or where you are and without a way to do anything about it (except if they happen to have dispel magic)
Here's the sixth level ability:
It allows you to conjure a spectral object and it can move within 300 ft. of you. The important feature is that it is indestructible and can only be countered by dispel magic.
You can cast spells as if you were in spectral object's place.
Whenever you cast a wizard spell on your turn, you can cast it as if you were in the spectral mind’s space, instead of your own, using its senses.
You don't need to be able to see the object to use this feature. So here's how it works: Say you are in a room and you suspect enemies are in another room. Simply move your spectral mind in the enemies room and bombard them with as many spells you like. Unless they have dispel magic, they can't do anything to the spectral object. They can't harm you, they don't even know where you are. For extra shenanigans, have another caster close the door by creating a stone wall on the door, or in some way create an illusion that the room in which you are is closed. Enemies will have no choice but to face your full wrath without being able to do anything about it.
What about counterspell: Counterspell is a reaction which you take when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell. If you cast the spell through your spectral mind, the opposite caster needs to target you with counterspell, and should be able to see you casting the spell since you are the one casting the spell and spectral mind is just an object not a creature. You cannot be counterspelled as long as you stay hidden! This gives you the full functionality of a wizard without risking your precious skin. Seriously, hide in a cabinet or in another room away from prying eyes and cast spells without worry! I think this is borderline broken and certainly makes Scribes one of the best, if not the best subclass.
- A rework to Dispel Magic and Counterspell to make them feel more satisfying. Spell
- If I Counterspell your Healing Word there’s nothing you can do about it
- War Magic Wizard is pretty slept-on
