Plants with Uses and Effects

So, I'm starting a new Campaign on Sunday with a group of friends over the internet, and I want this campaign to have a bit more of a survival focus. Quickly looking into things like potion crafting and alchemy, I found a surprising lack of guidance on what and how ingredients can be used. (Note: I didn't look very hard, forgive me if I simply overlooked something.) So I came up with a short list of plants, where they can be found and how they can be used. None of this has been tested at all and I'm pretty confident in my ability to balance the usefulness of things like this…

So yeah, here you go, I'd love to hear what other DMs think about these and if they think they might be a little to much.

Plants Found On The Island

  • Wibwort — A small leafy plant with a sweet minty smell with pink flower heads. Found in grassland and meadows.
    • When ground and mixed with boiling water, it makes a tea that grants the user 1d4 temporary hit points.
  • Ghost weed — A small shrub with small frond leaves with a grassy, spicy smell. Found in any warm environment with water.
    • Used as a dry spice with food.
    • +1 on next con save.
  • Pulweir — Small red flowers with a strong sweet floral scent,
    • +1 on charisma checks for 30 minutes while wearing/holding.
  • Thuin — An oily rotten smelling shrub with dark green leaves with black veins. Can be found near caves on in the deep forest.
    • The oil can be pressed out of the plant and collected,
    • The oil is used to make lamp oil,
    • If consumed, the user must make a DC10 con save or take 1d4 poison damage.
  • Nie — Small red fungus that grows on rocks when kept wet, Used a catalyst in alchemical recipes.
    • When combined in equal parts with at least one other ingredient, it increases the effect
      • +3 HP when used with health potion ingredients
      • +2 to Con Save DC when used with poison ingredients
      • +1 to skill bonuses when used with skill potion ingredients
  • Tansy Flax — long fibrous stalks with small yellow leaves. Found along riverbanks.
    • Used to make flax string for bows and rope.
  • Osnaire — A small bush with bright blue flowers, there is an oily sheen on the heavy green leaves. The flowers have a light metallic and earthy smell. Found in cold and mountainous regions.
    • When consumed or touched raw, the user must make a DC10 con save or take 1d4 poison damage.
    • Boiling the flowers makes a thick, oily poison used to coat weapons or taint food,
      • When Consumed, the user must make a DC14 con save, or take 1d8 + 4 poison damage,
      • When hit with a Coated Weapon, the target must make a DC12 Con Save or take 1d4 poison damage.
  • Cire — A green viney plant with deep blue flowers, smells like hops. Found growing on trees near the edge of forests.
    • When made into a tea, +1 to initiative for 1 hour, +1 to Dex skills for 10 minutes.
  • Ink Plant – A Small plant with black and blue leaves that drip a black oily liquid. Found near Streams and rivers in the forest.
    • The oil can be pressed out of the plant and collected.
    • When the oil is boiled down it makes a dark ink.
      • If the ink gets in a creature's eyes, they become Blind until their next short rest.
  • Scizoom — A small white mushrooms that grow on rotting wood or driftwood,
    • When consumed, dc8 con save success +10ft movement for 10 minutes
  • Chitin Shell — A small hard plant that looks like shells. Found on beaches near salt water.
    • The material is used for crafting jewelry and arrow heads.
  • Eekleek — A small green plant that can be found on the banks of the streams and rivers.
    • When mashed the plant attracts birds and insects (Roll d20, on a 5 or lower, random encounter with birds or insects)
  • Gug Leaf — A Medium Sized plant with egg shaped leaves, which are usually mint green. It also grows tiny flowers, which can be gold, light orange and dark orange. The plant has a potent Metallic smell to it that is hard to resist. Found in forests and foothills.
    • When smelled, the user must make a DC10 Wis Save,
      • On a failure the user must continue smelling the plant every 10 minutes or take 1d4 Psychic Damage, the effect ends when the user regains any hit points, is cured of any diseases, or finishes a short or long rest
    • Gug Leaf can be refined by boiling the flowers into a tea, when consumed the user gets an immediate sense of euphoria and energy
      • When Consumed, the user must make a DC15 Wis Save,
      • When Consumed, +1 to Acrobatics and Slight of Hand, and +1 Initiative for 1 hour.
  • Echo Lilac — A Medium Shrubby bush with tight bundles of white and purple flowers that have a strong floral smell. Found in meadows and grasslands.
    • When ground and mixed with boiling water, it makes a tea that grants the user Resistance to poison damage for 1 hour.
    • When made into a paste, as an action, it can be applied to wounds as a salve, the user regains 1d4 hit points.
  • Brisbane — An uncommon, large plant and can be found only in the deep forest. It has small, diamond shaped leaves, which are usually pine green. It also grows medium flowers, which can be light bronze, light blue and red.
    • When ground and mixed with boiling water, it makes a tea that grants the user advantage on their next Dexterity Saving Throw.
  • Espoil — A small plant and can be found in cold mountainous regions. It has small, circular leaves, which are usually green and white.
    • When ground and mixed with boiling water, it creates a liquid that rapidly rots nonliving organic materials.
    • When Consumed, the user must make a DC10 Con Save or take 1d6 Poison Damage.
  • Rare Dewberry — A rare large plant and can be found near rivers. It has thin, blunt tipped leaves, which are usually olive-green. It grows small bundles of bright green berries.
    • When consumed for the first time after a long rest, the user must make a DC10 Con Save,
      • On a success, the user regains one, level 1 or level 2 Spell Slot.
  • Red Nightshade — A small bush found in the mountains and foothills. It has small heart shaped leaves with red edges. It grows small bundles of deep red Berries.
    • When consumed Raw, the user must make a DC10 Con Save or become paralyzed for 10 Minutes.
    • The berries can be mashed and cooked into a paste that can be applied to weapons. A medium or smaller target must make a DC12 Con Save,
      • On a success, the Target has disadvantage on Attack Rolls during their next round
      • On a fail, the target becomes paralyzed for 1d4 rounds.
  • Green Nightshade — A small bush found in the forest. It has small heart shaped leaves with green glowing edges. It grows small bundles of black Berries.
    • When consumed Raw, the user must make a DC10 Con Save,
      • On a Success, the user gains Darkvision for 1 hour.
  • Red Mint — A small leafy vine that can be found at the edge of the forest. Has fuzzy, almond shaped leaves with a strong minty smell.
    • When ground and mixed with boiling water, it creates a tea that has a powerful cooling effect. When consumed, the user gains resistance to Fire Damage for 10 minutes.
  • Pokeweed — A Hard Grassy Stalk up to 6 ft tall that can be found in grasslands and meadows. It grows a small bundle of dark green leaves at the top.
    • The Hard material makes it perfect for crafting darts and arrow heads.
    • The tip of the stalk can be sharpened and hardened with fire to create a Short Spear that deals 1d4 Piercing Damage and can be thrown up to 45ft.
    • Thin Stalks can be used to craft Arrow Shafts.
