Last session my party infiltrated the "Cult of the Great General, Garagos" they've heard about around town, to find that it is actually just a group of nerds playing "Sewers & Serpents" DMed by the local fighting arena manager. They recently stopped a blood ritual disguised as a cage match at his arena (summoning circle was sneakily carved into the stone floor of the arena, was filling with blood throughout the battle) so they are already suspicious of the Arena Manager/DM.
My party decided to just join the S&S game and figure out what was going on, so I ended last session with the Manager/DM using illusion magic as all their visions fade to white. The Manager/DM is hella evil and has been hosting "LARPing sessions" with the NPC nerdy party members to set his plan to resurrect Garagos in motion. Now he has 5 actual, real life adventurers who are actually capable fighters, and he'd obviously want to use them (through illusions and tricks) to kick those resurrection plans into hyperdrive.
I'm planning to have them all play different characters for a session or two in game. Their D&D characters will think they are playing S&S while they're really just seeing the real world differently (in the world, S&S is a normal but nerdy illusion-based RPG, so illusion magic is normal for the game, just not the kind they'll be experiencing). Problem is, I can't think of any good ways to get them to inadvertently resurrect Garagos. They are already wary of doing what the Manager/DM says so I'll need to conceal it decently (while still giving hints so they know something is off), but I have no idea what to do besides round two of, "A ton of people are dying and bleeding out in a small area – OH NO! A hidden summoning circle is under them! gasp." I'm hoping for something less cartoony than the TF2 Meet the Pyro Trailer, but in the same vein.
Anybody have any ideas for rituals that simple illusions could misconstrue for my unwitting adventurers?
- Is it possible to dispel Mirage Arcane without Dispel Magic?
- Player wants to split party – forever.
- High level characters being very rare in the world doesn’t mesh well with things that can be bought/found in play settings.
