Ok so before I explain, I LOVE Critical Role, Matthew Mercer and everyone involved with everything and anything to do with the show. I have nothing against them.
The Mercer-Effect is when the DM and/or a player (or several players) who are fans of Mercer’s style of DMing or Critical Role, expect their playing experience to be as fun and epic as Mercer’s D&D experience.
Let me say this for those who can’t see the big picture.
Matthew Mercer has been playing Dungeons & Dragons since he was a pre-teen (Maybe even younger). Matthew Mercer is almost 40 years old^ which means he’s been playing the game well over 25+ years.
Another tidbit of information is that Matt’s first IMDb credit is from 1988’s Akira which means the man’s been voice acting PROFESSIONALLY FOR OVER 30 YEARS.
And that’s just Matt. Keep in mind that all of the players are also well established voice actors and have been long before they even started playing D&D with credits from shows such as Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist, and much much more.
What I’m trying to say is, if you’re in a game of D&D and you want your experience to be exactly like Critical Role or expect your DM to be just as good as Matt, you should lower your expectations. Now don’t get me wrong you should still strive for that, but it’s ok if it’s not exactly like that, it’s just a game and people don’t normally spend that much time with D&D. That’s like playing a game of basketball with your friends but then being upset because they don’t play as good as LeBron James or Kevin Durant.
D&D is a game to have fun, and what makes it fun is people realizing that it’s a game. A game that is meant for everyone and anyone to play.
That’s all I wanted to say. Sorry for the long rant, I don’t think I’ve ever posted on this subreddit before so forgive me if I’ve broken any rules or use an incorrect flair.
- I think the real Matt Mercer effect is many new players not realizing that this is a game with lots of rules and mechanics
- Good ways to explain things to old/experienced players?
- Overcoming the Reverse-Matt Mercer effect
