so as everyone knows, vanilla FO4 tends to get really easy at higher levels, even on Survival. i got sick of this and wanted a more grounded, dangerous, immersive experience, and with the help of mods, i got it.

before i post the mod list, i'll tell you the rules of this playthrough.

  1. No settlements. no safe bases to stash loot, no safe bed to sleep in, i have to carry my entire inventory on me at all times.

  2. No workbenches. i cannot modify any weapon or armor i find, i have to use them as-is. the Gun Nut perk is one of the reasons the game gets so easy later on, because you can craft top-tier weapons easily. the only exception i make for this is legendary items, since they spawn with base mods only. if i find a leg i want to use, i have to transfer the mods of an item i have/find onto the leg item, and this is a one-time deal.

  3. No power armor, no ballistic fiber, no chems. pretty much anything that makes it harder to kill me is off-limits. it also means i can't use utility chems like jet fuel for running around or grape mentats for buying/selling.

  4. No companions. makes it too easy.

  5. This is a minor rule because i use it in every playthrough, but no VATS, ever. slows down gameplay, makes no sense, makes game too easy, total immersion breaker.

so with no settlement building and no gear crafting, junk items have no value other than the caps they're worth, so i watch out for junk with good weight/value ratios.

the power armor ones are left over from a previous playthrough, and it's dangerous to uninstall mods mid-game, so they stay.

the real game changer is Better Locational Damage. the gist is, character and npc levels don't mean very much anymore, it's the gear that's key. weapon perks and receivers only increase damage a tiny bit, which means a base weapon with no perks is about as powerful as an Advanced weapon with full perks. weapon damage is also based around the caliber of a weapon, and piercing is based of the type of round. if an enemy has a lot of armor, a small-caliber pistol round won't do much to them.

the mod also normalizes health pools so they don't vary so widely – humans have pretty low health (including the Sole Survivor), mid-tier enemies like Super Mutants are much tougher to kill (small-caliber weapons do very little damage to them), and high-tier enemies like deathclaws have a ton of defense and health, so you'd better be able to put a lot of damage into them fast.

some other mods add immersion stuff like unpaused menues, turn bullets and lasers into projectiles instead of hitscan, minimizing the HUD as much as possible and better sound FX.

i also don't use Campsite's beds, it's only for cooking.

all of this adds up to an experience with very little downtime, and one that remains engaging throughout the playthrough, because as a human with very little health, a powerful enemy can kill you fast if you're not careful.
