NV Sephiroth and Gearing for Killers

With FF7 Remake banners coming up, there's been a lot of discussion about the units. One common myth I'd like to debunk about Sephiroth is that he's "hard to gear for killers". This argument did have some merit in JP for some specific races (Aqua and Spirit primarily), but on Global the few problems he may run into for some races have been fixed by the Clash of Wills helm, and some of our GLEX killers like Universe Eater. I'm going to give an example build for all of the races where he builds for killers with LB damage.

Universal Gear for Every Build

This will be the default setup for Sephiroth that he never takes off. For those of you who pull Sephiroth in the future after his event has ended, Cleome&Akstar's STMR katana is a suitable replacement for his event katana (you lose the 500 flat atk, but keep the LB damage at least).

  • Weapon: Event Katana (2h, 180 ATK, +500 ATK, +50% LB Dam)
  • (Itemworld: Rare + 10% ATK + ?? = +30% ATK)
  • Hat: Magister's Clash of Wills (+100% Chain Cap)
  • Chest: Own STMR
  • Materia1: Master of Fate (NV Cloud STMR)
  • Card: Own Card

The above leaves you uncapped on the following:

  • 370 of 400 ATK%
  • 250 of 300 LB Damage%

Now let's use the remaining gear slots to build for every race while capping the missing stats. Some of these choices are time limited, and some may have no good replacement, but if you've been active for the last year, you should have all or most of this. Riku's Glove may be the most controversial pick here, but a 2nd copy of Storm Kickers is a fine swap. For the Sora STMR / Charlotte TMR slots, those can be swapped by most LB damage materia.

Summary

So Sephiroth caps every stat and killer vs every single race except Aquatic, where he's left at 275/300.

What about resistances in Dark Visions?

Sephiroth has true brave shift, meaning he can swap forms at will with no cooldown. For max damage, Sephiroth only needs to spend at most 1 turn in his shift form for setup before the kill turn (to stack his LB once) and can spend every other turn in his base form geared purely defensive with resist and stuff.

Most (or maybe all?) Dark Vision fights have at least one safe round he can shift to stack his LB for one turn if you use a resist buff, and most of the above builds have a spare accessory slot that could be filled in with something like Awakened Rain STMR, or any resist accessory.

Closing Thoughts

This post isn't meant to sway your opinion on which FF7 unit to chase (if you're chasing at all), and I'm pretty biased for Sephiroth anyway. Still, I wanted to put it out there that Sephiroth can definitely gear for killers totally fine as long as you have a few key STMRs (or want to UoC to obtain them).
