After all the backlash with TLOU2’s story, it made me think about what makes a video game story “good”

Good to me, at least. TLOU 1's story was lauded to the extreme and personally I loved it too, but when you think about it the setting and story is about as generic as it gets. It used a very simple premise and managed to weave it beautifully into a 10-15 hour adventure.

Now with all the controversy with old mate saying "Schindler's List of video games" I still believe that video games, at least at this point, are so far of film quality that it's not even funny but I don't think that comparison is fair. They are two very different mediums and some people prefer to experience different stories in different ways.

I think the best told video game stories (at least mostly linear ones) are told in a way similar to Dredd or Fury Road. A few games that come to mind are Half Life 2 (the game really is balls to the wall action for most of it), Spec Ops: The Line, Titanfall 2, Portal 1/2, SOMA, Resident Evil 4, System Shock 2 and of course TLOU. The list goes on. I know the thing these games have in common is linear and seem to be structured like action movies, maybe that's just my preference or maybe that's the only style of directing truly fits in games where generally the goal is to kill everyone.

I'm not defending TLOU2 story cause I've only played the first hour (enjoyed it but damn the sad hit me already) it's just if movies like Terminator 2 and The Matrix have taught us anything is you can have kickass over the top action and leave you with a few thoughts beyond the action scenes.
