Content of the article: "An anonymous online survey exploring the factors that influence your entertainment experience when playing video games (18+)"
Hi all, my name is David and I am completing a PhD in the School of Psychology, University College Dublin. My PhD is focused on the psychological experience of video game entertainment – i.e. if a person plays a video game what is their experience like? Is it enjoyable, frustrating, immersive, boring, etc.? My research aims to identify the factors that come together to shape different individuals' gameplay experiences and to use this information to develop a comprehensive theoretical model of the experience to guide future research.
My supervisor and I are currently conducting an online survey of video game players' experiences. We believe that people who play video games, such as yourselves, have a unique and important perspective about their own gameplay experiences. Members of this subreddit, in particular, seem to have a detailed and nuanced understanding of the things that influence their gameplay experiences and of gaming in general. As such, if you are 18 years of age or older and would like to participate, we would really value your insight!
The survey is completely anonymous and should take no more than 20 minutes to complete (most people seem to finish the survey in less than 10 minutes). If you decide to participate, you will be asked questions about your individual characteristics (e.g. your age, your gender), your gaming profile (e.g. the genres you enjoy/do not enjoy, the amount of time you spend playing video games), and your views of the things that influence your gameplay experiences. Many of these questions involve indicating your agreement or disagreement to a statement or selecting one or more options from a list. Other questions include space for you to type out a response.
We have received ethical approval from the ethics committee in UCD and further information about the study is presented in an information sheet at the start of the survey. If you have any questions about the survey or want something clarified before you decide whether or not to participate, please do not hesitate to contact me.
