Mechanically, I had a lot of fun with the game once I had my character balanced the way I wanted. I loved the variety of weapons and how I could use a sword, spear, or surprisingly a giant great sword all with the same character build.
However, yea. Dark Souls 2 is the worst in the series by a long shot.
The adaptability being tied to agility as a stat was a bad move imo. Your roll is nearly useless in the early game, but after I’d pumped a lot of points into the skill it felt overpowered.
The level design is mostly meh and looked unfinished/unpolished in many areas except for Dranglic Castle and Dragonshrine.
Too many of the bosses were just a larger group of weaker enemies or gimmicky. Granted, a few were really cool like the Looking Glass Knight and the Ruin Sentinels was a boss comprised of multiple enemies done well, but The Duke’s Dear Freja boiled down to holding a torch, The Old Iron King was more “don’t roll into the lava hole” than don’t get hit by the boss, one boss was just a previous easy boss x2, repeatedly bait the same attack, etc…
The areas themselves were the hardest part of the game and usually because of ganky enemy placement, janky enemy design like a ghost in a foggy area you can’t lock onto, unavoidable NPC invaders, barrages of mages and archers that make Anor Londo look like a quiet park, and excessive traps.
Another one checked off the list, but with 80ish hours in the game (I restarted quite a few times thinking I could do a deathless run my first playthrough before finally accepting I wasn’t that skilled), I kind of wish I could’ve sunk them elsewhere.
- An old game I remember playing but can’t remember the name of.
- Bloodborne is a terrible game. Just play dark souls.
- Dark Souls 2
