Content of the article: "My “must play” games of 2020"
I played 22 games in 2020, of which I completed 13. Of those 12, there are 5 that I would consider "must play". That is, if you like the genre, you're missing out on something really unique and special by not playing it. Last year, I wrote about every game I played, but this year, I just want to focus on the best.
DOOM 2016: I posted about this game a couple months ago, so I'll keep this short. Fast-paced cathartic non-stop action from start to finish.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps: After Ori and the Blind Forest was one of my must play games of 2018, I was excited to finally play the sequel this year. As far as I'm concerned, it totally delivered. The movement is much more satisfying in this game, and you unlock new abilities at a much better pace too. The sound design and atmosphere are improved as well. I think the weapons switching system was a step backwards, and the story was weaker than the original, but overall I think it's a worthy sequel.
A Hat in Time: I don't love platformers, but the movement in this game rivals Mario at his best. Instead of your generic grass world, fire world, ice world, etc, this game puts you in a spooky forest, a movie studio run by birds, a cruise ship, and way more interesting environments than a typical 3D platformer. It's surprisingly polished for an indie game, and there's plenty to do in every level
Outer Wilds: This has got to be my game of the year. It's wonderful because of its simplicity. You don't have to collect 200 korok seeds, or collect flowers to make potions, or craft upgrades for your spaceship. There are no quests, shooting galleries, XP, or unlockables. You just fly around, walk around, and look at things. It's a game best experienced knowing as little as possible about it, so just go play it
Freespace 2: This was one of my must play games of 2019, but I kept playing more of it this year, and I'm still just blown away by how active the modding community of this game is over 20 years later. $10 gets you access not only to the original Freespace 2 (with current-gen graphics thanks to mods), but also the original Freespace, and dozens of fan-created campaigns, some of which rival or even surpass the base game in terms of quality. It's a cult classic, but one I will never stop recommending.
