Content of the article: "SIB Hades or Spelunky 2"
I kind of have an itch to scratch where I want to play something more active than the spreadsheet simulators I've been playing lately (Football Manager, Motorsport Manager, etc), and while these two games are on my radar I have some questions…
Game(s) I am considering:
- Spelunky 2
Why I'm Interested:
In the past I have played a lot of rogue/roguelite/roguelike games and have gotten a lot of time and enjoyment out of them. It's a genre I generally do well with, but after recently being burned by another game (Star Renegades) I'm looking for something with shorter play sessions that is more than just pretty sparkly graphics.
My concerns about purchasing the game(s):
Hades: I have a weird relationship with Supergiant. Specifically that the only game they've ever made that has remotely stuck with me was Pyre. For some reason their style and narration just doesn't do it for me. But I've heard praises sung up and down and high and low about Hades. I previously tried it on Steam for close to 2 hours before refunding it during prerelease. My reasons for refunding were twofold: 1) the game felt a lot like other games I had already played with a shiny new sheen and 2) when rooms would get crowded with bullets flying everywhere my computer would start to lag. I'm hoping that performance issues wouldn't be as much of an issue now that the game is out, but other streams and videos I've seen make me wonder if that's the case.
Spelunky 2: I suck at the original Spelunky. Well, maybe not suck as much as other people. I have made it all the way to Olmec and have beaten him before, but that was awhile ago. But in terms of getting good consistent runs and finding all of the secrets etc etc that's something I haven't been able to do well. Spelunky 2 looks a lot like a 2nd chance to give the game another shot, since it's a lot like the first game but with "more" and "better." But at the same time, I'm not sure if I'll just get frustrated and put the game down like I did the first.
Maybe the answer is just to sit on my hands and not buy either, especially at full price. But I would appreciate hearing you all's thoughts on either of these games, including how you're enjoying it and why.
- Deleting games from my library increased my enjoyment of playing other games immensely
- I feel slightly vindicated after three years of trying
