SIB The Forest for a single player experience if I really like 7D2D but want something with a bit more… substance?

Longer than I thought it would be. TL;DR at the bottom.

I've sunk probably 2k hours into 7 Days to Die, and I really love the game, but I kind of want something more story driven and/or that doesn't feel quite so… grindy, I guess. Towards the end game of 7 Days I always kind of feel like I'm in a rut… not enough supplies to make my base truly impenetrable, but so bored of going through houses basically 1 shooting zombies looking for the 1 specific item I need.

Overland travel to cities more than a few kilometers away from my base is tedious with the way terrain generates, and trying to bring enough loot back to be meaningful and make the trip worth it is kind of a pain due to limited inventory space. So I basically mine near my base, craft mlre ammo for turrets and my guns, and use the console to fast forward to the next horde night, rinse and repeat.

Does The Forest suffer from the same kind of issues in the mid-late game? How expansive is the crafting? The AI of the mutants is part of what draws me to it, not just mindless zombies, but I can't find a whole lot of in on how the crafting/base building is, other than that you can.

I've also looked into DayZ, but don't really like the idea of always being on a public server. Sometimes it's ok, but I don't want to always be dealing with people with massively more amounts of play time just dumpstering me and stealing what little I have.

Any other recommendations? I really like the wilderness survival genre, preferably with something to try and survive against (zombies, mutants, etc) so The Long Dark just doesn't sound overly appealing to me. I've played Ark for a bit, but couldn't really get into the whole taming dinosaurs thing. Maybe I'm just bad at it, but I got bored and gave up after probably 10 hours.

TL;DR: If I like 7D2D, but get really bored in the mid-late game, will I like The Forest, or will it just be more of the same?
