I do not hate this game, yet for the life of me I cannot understand why it is so dearly fondled and lauded as “one of the greatest games ever”. I tried getting into it when it first came out and quickly lost interest, months later I tried again, same results, and here I am almost four years later giving it a third, genuine try and still not feeling it. It is particularly ironic because some of my favorite games ever are open world games. Red Dead 1 and 2, Skyrim/Oblivion, Fallout 3/New Vegas, the witcher 3 are all some of my favorite games ever. What makes it even more ironic is I LOVE other Zelda games. OoT, Majoras Mask, Minish Cap, Etc. Are all some of my favorite games ever. Heck, I even love some JRPGs like nier automata, dark souls, etc. This game seemed perfect for me
Yet the more I play breath of the wild, the less I feel like I’m playing a Zelda game. The open world feels a bit barren and lonely. Far too many enemies are scattered around mixed with a subpar combat system and a weapon degradation system that sounded appealing in theory but ends up just being tedious. The few times I do run into an NPC I feel like they have nothing interesting to say. The puzzles can be cool (I do like the open ended approach to solving them) but they are quite sparse and usually just result in Korok seeds which becomes useless really quick. And for the love of god I HATE the laser beam tank guys who are basically a quick time event disguised as an enemy. I do feel like the game has some cool moments like the divine beasts and such, but everything in between feels drab. I purchased this game because I was led to believe this is the ultimate playground where you can do almost anything you want, but I think they aired a bit too much into minimalism because I often feel like there is nothing to do. Sometimes I feel like this game’s reception was greatly influenced by the Zelda branding. If Ubisoft or even Bethesda made this exact game I feel like everyone would consider it mediocre at best.
The thing is , I want to like this game. So please, anyone who is willing, I would greatly. Appreciate a rebuttal to help convince me I missed something.
