[Fan-fiction] The Icebrood Saga – Episode 6: A Saga of Frost and Flame

While I can appreciate that the IBS ending was cut short in Episode 5 to start development on EoD, I hope that one day ArenaNet will go back and flesh out the finale to give Jormag and Primordus an ending they deserve.

In lieu of the Return to the Icebrood Saga finale, I present you my alternative/extended ending – Episode 6: 'A Saga of Frost and Flame' – that builds upon the existing story in Episode 5 without retconning lore.

NOTE: Despite being OC, this post still contains spoilers for the Icebrood Saga.


A Tale of Two Dragons

The Icebrood and Destroyers are rapidly consuming leyline magic, leaving us on the precipice of a cataclysmic event. Taimi and Aurene devise a plan to pinpoint where the leylines intersect and lure the dragons together, forcing them to destroy each other. Councilor Vark agrees to this approach, and the Commander relays the plan to the Allied Factions' representatives in the Eye of the North.

The Allied Factions devise a five-pronged attack:

  1. The newly-formed United Legions will march from Umbral Grotto in the north.
  2. The Norn and Kodan will rally their warriors in Frostgorge Sound to the east.
  3. The Dwarves will take ancient tunnels linking the Deldrimor Ruins and Anvil Rock.
  4. The Pact (alongside the Tengu and Skritt) will march from the Vigil Keep in the south.
  5. The Crystal Bloom and Exalted will remain with Aurene in EotN until the area is secure.

The meta consists of four paths you can join, each of which culminate in the battle at the Dragonstorm Arena. Aurene, the Crystal Bloom and the Exalted will join the fight for the final battle.


Path of the Great Spirits

Drakkar Waypoint, Frostgorge Sound:

  • Knut Whitebear has called Norn warriors to join the Legendary Hunt.
    • Sigfast and Skarti Knutsson rally the Wolfborn.
    • Owl Shaman Garon rallies followers of Owl after he feels her faint presence.
  • Claws of Koda from various Sanctuaries have rallied their Kodan warriors.
    • Cresting Wave (Claw) and Deep Song (Voice) rally Kodan from Frostgorge Sound.
    • Deep Water (Claw) rallies Kodan from Bitterfrost Frontier.
    • Cloudseeker (Claw) rallies Kodan from Bjora Marches.

Ignite the Brazier of Koda

  • Jormag's proximity to the Dragonstorm has caused the area to be inflicted with Bitter Cold.
  • Help Deep Song reignite a Brazier of Koda, which will grant the Warmth of Koda and protect you from the Bitter Cold.
  • Collect wood and defeat Abberant (Green) creatures while Deep Song completes the ritual.
  • Deep Song becomes the Avatar of Koda; who reveals that Koda was once an regular Kodan who merged with the White Bear Spirit (a Spirit of the Wild).
  • Cresting Wave and his Kodan remain at the Brazier of Koda to protect it.

Locate the lost Shrine to Owl

  • Escort Owl Shaman Garon as he searches for the source of Owl's presence.
  • Defeat Fallen (Red) Norn and Kodan enemies along the path.
  • You find a lost Shrine to Owl, where Owl Shaman Garon calls out to the spirit. Owl appears, and is severely wounded after her encounter with Ryland in Snowden Drifts.
  • Despite her weakened state, Owl decides to accompany the Norn and Kodan and guide you deeper into the Dragonstorm.
  • Deep Water and his Kodan remain at the Shrine to Owl to protect it.

Help Owl investigate the crying in the distance

  • Defeat Sons of Svanir (Blue) enemies along the path.
  • A Brazier of Jormag prevents you from venturing deeper into the storm.
  • Protect the Avatar of Koda from Sons of Svanir while he purifies the Brazier of Jormag.
  • The now-purified Brazier of Koda allows you to travel ahead, where you find Corrupted Shrines to Ox, Wolverine, and Eagle.

  • With the help of Koda and Owl, attempt to subdue the spirits and free them from Jormag's control.
  • The Spirits are almost subdued, but at 5% health are revitalised by a surge in Jormag's magic.
  • Use the Corrupted Essence of each Corrupted Spirit to destroy another.
    • Draw essence from Ox (Red) to destroy Wolverine (Green).
    • Draw essence from Wolverine (Green) to destroy Eagle (Blue).
    • Draw essence from Eagle (Blue) to destroy Ox (Red).
  • Owl absorbs their magic, allowing her to ascend and become a Great Spirit.


Path of the United Legions

Umbral Grotto, Drizzlewood Coast:

  • Following the Charr Civil War, the United Legions choose Crecia to lead the assault on Jormag.
  • The Iron Legion erect a temporary gateway, portalling in the Olmakhan.
  • The United Legions board Charr Choppers and fly south toward the Dragonstorm.

Capture the Frost Legion Outpost

  • Due to the Dragonstorm, the Charr Choppers can't fly any further.
  • March with the United Legions and sieze the Frost Legion Outpost.
  • Clear the outpost of Frost Legion and salvage supplies to build a fleet of Charr Tanks.

Assault on Ice Tooth Keep

  • Fight through bands of Frost Legion until you reach the Ice Tooth Keep.
  • Defend the Charr Tanks from Frost Legion while they breach the Ice Tooth Keep.
  • When you enter the Ice Tooth Keep, you find it is defended by Ryland.

Frost Legion

Ryland Steelcatcher, Champion of Jormag

  • Ryland is nearly defeated, but at 5% health is healed by a surge in Jormag's magic and flees.
  • Rox finds Braham's Bow left behind, which was previously enchanted with a Jotun Fire Scroll.
  • Over your transponder, the Norn share that Jotun Fire Magic is capable of piercing Jormag's hide.
  • Efram reveals that Flame Legion have historically imbued the Claw of the Khan-Ur with similar magic over many generations.
  • Crecia is named Khan-Ur by Imperators Mia, Malice and Efram, and is bestowed the Claw of the Khan-Ur.


Path of the Great Dwarf

The Grotto, Thunderhead Peaks

  • King Jalis Ironhammer emerges from the Depths of Tyria with the King's Guard. The remaining Deldrimor Dwarves are now on the surface of Tyria.
  • The Dwarves enter an ancient tunnel linking the Deldrimor Ruins and Anvil Rock.

Brew a batch of Alkar's Alchemical Acid

  • You enter into a cavern rife with key ingredients for Alkar's Alchemical Acid.
  • Collect ingredients for the acid and fight off waves of Destroyers while it is brewed.

Duncan the Destroyer, and the Destroyer of the Stone Dwarf

  • Duncan the Destroyer is protected by a flame barrier, and summons the Destroyer of the Great Dwarf – intent on destroying the Deldrimor Dwarves.
  • Battle the Destroyer of the Great Dwarf, using Alkar's Alchemical Acid periodically to break its shell.
    • Clear waves of Stone Summit and Destroyers throughout the fight.
  • When the boss gets to 5%, it is healed by a surge in Primordus' magic. Duncan the Destroyer also uses Primordus' death magic to resurrect the Stone Summit army and create a wave of death-branded Destroyers.
  • Jalis realises that they cannot win, and sacrifices himself alongside the King's Guard to allow the Dwarves to escape and kill the Destroyer of the Great Dwarf in the process.
  • Emerge from the tunnel as it collapses.


Path of the Pact

Vigil Keep, Gendarran Fields:

  • Logan Thackery rallies the Pact, alongside its new allies the Tengu and the Skritt, before embarking north towards the Dragonstorm.

The Pact

Secure the Quetzal village

  • Enter to the Scorched Cascades, which have been ravaged by the minions of Primordus. Entire villages have been destroyed and most of the local Tengu, Skritt, and Centaurs populations are presumed dead.
  • Clear the Quetzal village of Destroyers and reinforce the area. Provide aid where needed.
    • Order of Whispers scouts disappear to scout ahead.
    • Durmand Priory scholars set up camp to monitor and research Jormag and Primordus.
    • The Vigil follows Jhavi and Logan to escort Taimi while she locates areas suitable for Leyline Siphons to attract Primordus and Jormag. They are joined by Kasmeer, Marjory, and Canach.
    • The Tengu recruit Quetzal villagers to aid the expidition.

  • Protect Taimi as she investigates potential areas to erect the Leyline Siphons.
  • Taimi's research provokes waves of Destroyers at each research location (x2).
  • The Order of Whispers report a group of Destroyers congregating around a magma cavern. Taimi's research at this location attracts Braham.

Braham Eirsson, Champion of Primordus

  • Fight Braham off while Taimi collects data on the leylines.
  • Braham is nearly defeated, but at 5% health is healed by a surge Primordus' magic and flees.
  • The magma cavern exits to the Dragonstorm Arena.
    • Enter the Dragonstorm Arena, which after a quick examination Taimi deems is the perfect location to erect the Leyline Siphons.
    • Taimi is portalled back to the Durmand Priory research camp by Kasmeer, where she can continue researching Jormag and Primordus.

Enter the Dragonstorm Arena

  • Kasmeer opens portals from the Corrupted Shrines, Ice Tooth Keep, and Anvil Rock for our allies.
  • Kasmeer opens a portal for the Crystal Bloom and Exalted to enter and erect Leyline Siphons.
  • Ryland Steelcatcher and Braham Eirsson arrive to herald Jormag and Primordus respectively.

Jormag vs. Primordus

Dragonstorm

  • Defeat Braham and Ryland simultaneously to make the dragons vulnerable.
    • Destroy enemy Leyline Siphons as they spawn to prevent healing.
  • Jormag and Primordus arrive.
    • The Pact and the Dwarves use Alkar's Alchemical Acid to corrode Primordus' hide.
    • The Norn, Kodan and Charr use Koda's Flame to weaken Jormag, followed by Rox firing Braham's Bow to pierce its hide.
    • Join the Crystal Bloom and the Exalted and use Primatic Energy to attack Jormag and Primordus once their hides are weakened.
  • The first attempt is not effective.
    • Taimi and the Durmand Priory research a stronger acid.
    • Crecia and Efram relinquish Flame Magic from the Claw of Khan-Ur to empower Braham's Bow.
  • Defeat Braham and Ryland simultaneously to make the dragons vulnerable.
    • Destroy enemy Leyline Siphons as they spawn to prevent healing.
  • Jormag and Primordus are vulnerable.
    • The Pact and the Dwarves use Alkar's Augmented Alchemical Acid to corrode Primordus' hide.
    • The Norn, Kodan and Charr use Koda's Flame to weaken Jormag, followed by Rox firing Braham's Empowered Bow to pierce its hide.
    • Join the Crystal Bloom and the Exalted and use Primatic Energy to attack Jormag and Primordus once their hides are weakened.
  • The second attempt is effective and the dragons are wounded.
    • Siphon magic from the Leyline Siphons and transfer it to Aurene to sever the twin dragons from all magic sources.
    • Aurene pulls us back, allowing Jormag and Primordus to clash.

Epilogue

  • Primordus and Jormag draw magic from their most-powerful minions right before they clash, leaving Braham and Ryland disempowered.
    • Braham survives, and is separated from the Spirits of the Wild.
    • Ryland clashes with Rytlock and Crecia, concluding in his death at the hands of his father.
  • Aurene absorbs most of the magic from Jormag and Primordus, but much of it is left unaccounted for. Taimi and Gorrik see this as an urgent issue to investigate ("Return to…").
  • The Pact, United Legions, Norn, Kodan, Dwarves, Tengu, and Skritt celebrate their victory over the twin dragons and mourn their losses.
    • The Pact will dedicate the next Dragon Bash in Hoelbrak to cemmemorate the deaths of Jormag and Primordus. Dragon's Watch (Kasmeer, Marjory, Braham, Rox, Taimi, Gorrik and Canach) are reunited, along with members of Destiny's Edge (Logan, Rytlock and Caithe).
    • The United Legions congratulate Crecia as the new Khan-Ur. Botica and Rox toy with the idea of the Olmakhan joining the United Legions.
    • The Norn celebrate the return of Owl, and mourn the losses of Ox, Eagle, and Wolverine. The Great Spirits (Wolf, Raven, Bear, Leopard) are are reunited with Owl and Koda (White Bear).
      • The six Great Spirits plan to disembark Tyria to take time to recover and mourn the losses of Ox, Eagle, and Wolverine.
    • The Kodan plan to journey north-east and search for surviving Sanctuaries in the Far Shiverpeaks.
    • The Dwarves question their place in Tyria post-Primordus, and discuss the idea of rebuilding Deldrimor.
      • Some Dwarves say they feel the spirit of the Great Dwarf watching over them. Ghosts of King Jalis Ironhammer and other Dwarves can be seen atop Anvil Rock.
    • The Tengu offer the displaced Quetzal villagers a home in the Dominion of Winds.
    • The Skritt decide to remain in the Scorched Cascades to search for surviving scratches and assist in rebuilding what remains.
