If you're like me then you absolutely hate the current meta, no control deck seems to be playable because of the insane amount of direct face damage. I previously mentioned how I ran control warrior and lost games where I didn't take a single point of minion damage. I also really hate what I call the "do nothing" priest that reduces his hand's cost to 0 and then well… Does nothing… So I went to a different direction.
Anyways, the key to beating the meta was being able to out-heal the mages and I think the only card that can currently do it is Apotheosis. It's INSANELY good in the current meta, especially since NOBODY trades and when combo'd with Samuro it's literally a full heal and board clear. I'm not saying we're favored against mages, but it's a winnable machup around 50% of the time I'd say and we are favored against Paladin and other aggro decks if you know how to play control correctly.
Here's the deck with a few explanations underneath:
Year of the Gryphon
2x (1) Holy Smite
2x (1) Renew
1x (1) Wave of Apathy
2x (2) Condemn (Rank 1)
2x (2) Insight
1x (2) Serena Bloodfeather
2x (2) Thrive in the Shadows
2x (3) Apotheosis
2x (3) Hysteria
1x (3) Mindrender Illucia
2x (3) Palm Reading
1x (4) Blademaster Samuro
2x (4) Cabal Acolyte
1x (4) Shadow Word: Ruin
1x (4) The Nameless One
1x (4) Void Flayer
1x (4) Xyrella
1x (7) Soul Mirror
1x (8) G'huun the Blood God
1x (8) Power Word: Fortitude
1x (10) C'Thun, the Shattered
Some card choices probably don't seem obvious, so let me explain:
Power Word Fortitude : Usually costs around 3 or 4, we use it on a taunt or on a lifesteal minion, surprisingly good since there is little to no hard removal in Paladin and Rogue and only devolving in mage.
Illucia: Don't greed her too much, as long as we nuke the pen flingers it's good enough value. She's especially good against Rogue, but you need to know how to play her correctly. Do not be afraid to let her sit idly in your hand until you run out of value, if that doesn't ever happen it's fine, that means you're winning.
Samuro: The best card in the deck. ALWAYS keep it in mulligan, especially if you also have Apotheosis. In case you didn't know, the Frenzy double dips on the heal, meaning that even if your regular attack killed a minion, the frenzy effect will still damage said minion again and heal you.
The class legendaries: Nothing insane, but good removal. Nameless one make libram paladin cry, also overall pretty good card. DO NOT greed those cards excessively just because they're legendaries, they're not key for the deck.
C'thun: Win condition in case outcontroling isn't enough (it usually is) and overall the C'thun parts are pretty good cards in a control deck
Insight and Shadows: Help us draw the Samuro combo and overall pretty good and easy to play cards with Palm Reading. Since we run many pseudo-combo cards (Illucia, Samuro and Xyrella) the cost reduction on minions is super good.
Cabal Acolyte: Makes the 2 mana watchposts cry and is overall really good in the current meta
Bonus: To all those Priest haters: (almost) no stealing cards or resurrecting in that deck lol
If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to let me know in the comments or by DM
Edit: Just finished a game at 30 health against a mage after being hit by double fireball AND DOUBLE NAGRAM SLAM… I don't think there is any other control deck in the current expansion that could survive that
