Content of the article: "I think one of the biggest reasons Alatreon received such a mixed reception is actually a flaw that the entire series has had since the first game."
That flaw being how the game poorly explains it's own mechanics.
Alatreon is one of the few monsters that actually require an in-depth knowledge of how damage is calculated. For example, most casual players don't know that elemental damage is a flat number per attack, so that's why faster weapons tend to have elemental meta builds rather than raw. It's not really their fault, either, as the game simply doesn't explain it.
I'm sure a sizeable number of the playerbase just looks up whatever meta set for their favorite weapon set is and sticks to that. Right now, we're in a raw meta for the vast majority of weapons. When it comes to Alatreon, the game certainly tries to tell you to use elemental damage, but the game doesn't tell you that attack boosting skills (attack boost, agitator, crit without ele crit) doesn't boost your elemental damage.
So, some people will see this dps check, slap on an elemental weapon and run with their raw set. Naturally, it's going to be very difficult to hit that threshold and you can't blame them for thinking the dps check is too harsh. However, it does seem like more people are warming up to Alatreon after looking up sets that boost elemental damage and learning more about the game and the threshold becomes less of an issue.
Personally I can hit that threshold very easily, but I'm an SnS main who has done extensive outside reading on how Monster Hunter works outside the game not only with elemental damage, but what attacks do more elemental damage and optimal combos. It's unreasonable for me, or anybody else like me, to assume that Alatreon is fair because we know more about the game than what the game tells you IMO. I'll pick on CantaPerMe's kinsect kill, and people citing the kinsect's low damage when writing off people's struggle with Alatreon has "low skill". Kinsects may do low overall damage, but they do a ton of elemental damage, so a kinsect can theoretically have an easier time with the threshold than a greatsword, despite greatswords doing way more damage.
tl;dr the backlash against Alatreon is partly because the franchise infamously fails to explain it's own mechanics and we shouldn't assume people know what the game doesn't tell you.
