Content of the article: "For me… RDR2 is the best game of the last 5 years"
I'm going to be preaching to the choir here, but hopefully someone who worked on the game might see it. If not, never mind! If you've not finished the game, just ignore this post until you do.
So I bought RDR2 for PS4 the week it came out in October 2018. Immediately got sucked in, absolutely loved the game… but then life got in the way. I only just picked it up again to finish it a week ago.
Everything, and I mean everything about this game is incredible. Beautiful. Super well thought out. And I didn't realise how much I straight-up missed its world.
As a piece of software, it paints a picture that's so vivid and so lifelike at times that by the end of the story I found myself grieving. I thought 'dude, you can't be sad at vidya game', but there I was. Sad. Sad at the loss of someone that I was connected to, invested in, wanted the best for. Sad for the loss of 'Storm'. I wanted to see Dutch and Micah dead for what they did!
Honestly, what a confusing moment. I've felt wonder and amazement playing a game before, but this is something else. Rockstar have attempted to create a representation of nature and largely succeeded. It's the benchmark of open worlds – layers of depth and detail to just about every facet. From the weather to the trees, the wilderness to the towns, every moment is an opportunity to marvel and observe at detail. What a ride. What an incredible journey. And it seems to go on, and on, and on… by the time it got the the point where it's going to end, I didn't want it to.
I'm not sure what upsets me more – the fact that the game is over, or the fact that we don't know if Rockstar is capable of doing it again. GTA really is the antithesis of RDR2. You don't really give two shits about anyone in it… not really, anyway. RDR2 seems to have soul. I miss Arthur already. Weird.
P.S. Yes, I played the Uncharted games and loved them. Played TLOU and Spiderman. I think the reason I felt compelled to write this is because I don't think any of those games had an effect on me like RDR2 did. Also, 10/10 to the developers for getting such great performance out of such an incredible looking game!
