What do you do in the verse? My story. (NSFW for use of bad words)

So there I am last night. The fuckos that can't do a quick scan of the infosphere are out in full force shitting up system chat with salty cries of "autopilot blew me up!" I get a message from a chick named Tecia, goes by Twitch. Says to come see her. She says she's got some work that she thinks I'll be interested in but mentions she needs people without a crime stat since she can't afford to have local security sniffing around. Sounds fishy right? Yeah I thought so to, but BlacJac and all the other corporate sec goons are sketchy too. What's the harm in having a chat though?

At this point I should mention that I caved a picked up a nice little jack of all trades boat called a Cutlass Black. It's basically a couple engines strapped to a big ole cargo bay. She's big, mean, and unrefined as all hell inside with exposed structure and piping. I love her, but she makes me feel like a bad guy just sitting at the stick.

So, I say "fuck it" and blast off to Area 18, drop down into atmo and park up at the spaceport. Cozy. I jump on a train and head into town, following the marker on my HUD. It leads me down a few dead end alleys before I find the right one, and there's Twitch lazing on a chair on a raised up section of floor with her goons all over the place.

She sends a couple missions to my mobi. I briefly consider the one to break some of her boys out of a prison transport but I'm not sure I want all that heat. I settle on stealing some drugs from a stash house. As long as everyone that gets bodied has a record I shouldn't be in any trouble, right?

Off I go. I spend the next hour trying to find the ONE package of fucking drugs she cares about among the pallets full of them. There's blood everywhere, some of it is my doing, the rest probably belongs to the contents of those suspiciously proportioned black bags. It would help if I knew what the fuck I was actually looking for. Pharmaceuticals aren't my jam.

Finally spot it, it does look like tree bark in a bag, it was just hiding in a dark corner. Bad luck. Back to the cutty, kick out the other packages I had gathered up and placed in a "possibles" stack, that shit is hard to get rid of and I don't want to get scanned by security with it in my hold, that's a mess of trouble I'd rather not be in over a few hundred credits. I've got a nice 5 digit payday coming my way for the one.

She wants it delivered to a private pad, kinda close to town for my tastes, but I've come this far. I firewall the throttle and swoop in fast with eyes on the scopes, all is clear and I touch down on the rooftop pad. In the distance someone in a fighter takes off from the spaceport… Cool. Out the back, shove the package in the drop box and collect. Cha-ching. No crime stat, got paid, all is shiny.

Off I go to do some other shit, but I'm really noticing how much less the missions are worth, I guess crime DOES pay. Apparently the Sunday morning cartoons lied. I'm paging through the available contracts and debating what I feel like doing next when call comes in, Twitch wants to talk again. Shiny. Off I go back to Area 18, and back to that little alley where she's set herself up like an old-timey warlord. This time there's only two options…. kill all the security forces in a bunker…. or spring those dudes from the transport…. it was a long trip here and 40k plus bonuses sounds real nice right about now.

Fuck it. Back to space I go, hit the QT beacon. There's a couple ships there next to the target, also cuttys. I approach and they go red. Oh boy, here I go killin again. Pop, pop. My HUD lights up. Assault, homicide, vehicle destruction, I half read them as they scroll past, there's still work to be done and I'm probably on the clock now before someone takes notice. We're in the deep end now kids, but that's fine. I'll swing by Grim Hex after this, pick up a hack chip and make these go away, no big deal. Bounties don't go out until CS3 anyway.

I line up for easy access from the hold to the front door of the transport without getting too close, and notice that it's already busted open for me just like Twitch said it would be, nice. I park up and go open my side doors, and then quickly duck off to the side. Hey look a welcoming party! Good thing I'm at a funny angle, makes this a pretty safe spot. I'm not sure if ship shields stop small arms fire or not… or if I parked up with the nose of this cat inside my shields or not. I think I see the telltale ripple of my shields taking a hit but I might also see some rounds coming in the door. Hard to say, I was a little preoccupied.

I carry a silenced sniper rifle for bunker missions, evens the odds before they see me. I still have it with me, and now it's in my hands. The welcoming party isn't standing in cover currently, all stacked up at the door trying to be the first to bag the would-be boarder. Whoopse, guess they skipped that day of goon school. With the nose clear I switch to my trusty P4-AR and EVA over. All is quiet.

I pop open the door to the first hold, conveniently BlacJac wears black and bright fucking yellow armor. He's surprised and conveniently hi vis. Down he goes. I've been in one of these ships before, and I know that a catwalk runs the length of her, overlooks all the cargo holds. Seems like a no-brainer.

It's a whole lot of blood and scrolling alert messages. Assault on a security officer, homicide, repeat, repeat, repeat. I barely see them anymore, I'm too busy watching the doors and corners as I move through the ship. There's more than I expected, but I don't take any fire. High ground and my silenced P4 are wonderful equalizers.

I find the manifest, it's just me and the cryo pods now. Jot down the names from the contract, should have done that before I got here… I'm feeling like my time may be growing short. I find their corresponding numbers, and spot a suspicious tag line about high potential for retaliation and separate interrogations for two numbers, one matches one of the names on my list. That must be the informant Twitch said she suspected.

Back through the holds I go, punching defrost on Twitch's boys, and emptying what's left of my mag into the informant's pod. Shiny, last thing to do is unass the area, so back to the cutty I go. I slide into the seat and make it happen. Soon as I get clear, the payment comes. Apparently "+ bonuses" means an additional 8k.

I'll take it, but now that I'm clear it's time to see how much trouble I'm in…. CS4. Well, now the hunters will be after me. Fortunately I really like the atmosphere in Grim Hex and Levski. Super punk rock spaceman vibes, and the stores there have all the best toys.

Cut to today. Every motherfucker has a stealth bomber on loan, so when I'm all alone and the radar lock indicator on my instrument panel flicks on it's a little thrill as I hit the afterburners and find someplace else to be in a big hurry. There have been a lot more homicides and assaults, but damn if it isn't a lot more fun on this side of the law, and profitable too.

Now before you carebears go getting your panties all in a wad, I'm not blowing up helpless miners for kicks… usually… I'm mostly running jobs for the local scum and villainy. Go here, get that, take it there. Don't ask questions, don't stand still for too long, collect payment. Stick it to the man and fade off into the black. There's a whole lot of space to hide in out there after all.

I'm sure one day my luck will run out and I'll have to go break a few rocks in Klescher, but for now, this is a lot of fun. Just the same, maybe next time you see a contract with ole Bronin's name on it show up in your feed, you give that one a pass? After all, I'm probably not hurting anyone you care about. Feel free to say hi in the chat though, I'm usually there telling those dumbasses to look for the big glowing tunnel that screams "FLY THROUGH ME!"
