B35’s Modder Interviews- A Written Interview with tktk1 of TK Dodge and Ultimate Combat

Hello everybody, this is B35Patriot and this is B35's Modder Interviews, a series of written interviews I am doing with various modders from the community! Today, we have the one and only tktk1, creator of Ultimate Combat, TK Dodge, Quick Light, and Enhanced Character Edit. He's made plenty of mods, and many are held in importance by players across the globe, both in the USA and Japan. Today, we'll be talking with him about his modding career, and his thoughts on Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls.

Anyway, let's get into the interview!


Q: When did you first begin playing the Elder Scrolls and/or Skyrim?

A: In 2011, I was feeling cramped playing a Japanese game with a lot of branching stories. I was looking for something with a more free atmosphere and adventure.

That's how I found Assassin's Creed and Oblivion.
After playing through a lot of Oblivion, I was in the middle of playing Morrowind when Skyrim was released.

Q: What first got you into the modding scene?

A: Shortly after Skyrim came out, a certain texture mod was popular, but I was bothered by the fact that the source of the mod was unknown. So I'd try drawing textures myself.

I've played with replacing textures in other games before, but this was the first time I'd ever tried to draw a texture in earnest.

Q: What was the first mod that you made or contributed in?

A: The vanilla head mesh is asymmetrical and I particularly bothered about the left eyelid, so I fixed that. It was an anonymous work. RAN was working on the same thing at the time, which later led to the Enhanced Character Edit collaboration.

Q: As a modder, you've made a lot of different mods, from TK Dodge to Quick Light. What do you think is your favorite mod out of all you have made, and why?

A: That's a difficult question because I love them all.

As a modder, it's Ultimate Combat. It took years of trial and error to do something that no one had done yet, which was to use enemy AI-added attack animations. Figuring out the mechanics was like a puzzle. I got a lot of people to help us.

As a user, I like Quick Light because it's so simple.

Q: You are most well known for your combat mods overall such as Ultimate Combat and Ultimate Dragons. What inspired you to make them, and can you walk us through the process of how you designed and implemented them?

A: I think the most famous one is the Enhanced Character Edit :p

The reason for the creation of the Ultimate series is that Skyrim's combat is monotonous.
But I think that's also because Skyrim is more about experiencing and exploring the world, and it's all about playability.

If it was a game that required hard action like Dark Souls, we wouldn't be able to explore at will and many players would drop out.

So I don't emphasize making the combat difficult. I'm focusing on improving the monotonous elements of the game while further increasing its playability.

The reason why monotonous because you're just fighting in standing there, and the more powerful character is supposed to win. This isn't challenging enough.

The key elements of the action game are positioning and timing. There's very little change in position in Vanilla, so I've added movement attacks and dodges to change the position and timing. Speed bonus, timed blocking and poise system are also additions that change timing and positioning.

Q: Are you doing any new modding work currently? If so, what are you working on?

A: I'm working on fixing a bug in an existing mod. So I'm not working on anything new.
However, I want to make a more unique and challenging boss mod. For example, bosses like the red eagle to have an original look and animations without using a generic Draugr.

Q: Looking back on all of your mods as a whole, how satisfied are you with how they have turned out?

A: I'm very happy to have so many users, supporters, friends, and teachers who have been kind to me. I'm grateful for that. There's still a lot of work to be done to improve it.

Q: Now for some closing questions to begin to end this interview. What would you say is your favorite game excluding Skyrim?

A: I recently play Townscaper, which is more of a toy than a game, but it's fun. It's kind of soothing.

I love indie games like Factorio and Terraria that use endless amounts of time. But it's a problem when I play so much that I can't be modding or do anything else. I also like beautiful games like GRIS, Monument Valley, and INSIDE.

Also, I played Kirby Super Start like crazy. It's easy to lose your save data.

Q: What is your favorite mod, outside of any of your own or ones you contributed to?

A: AddItemMenu is the best mod. I'm a bit involved in it, so is this answer a violation?

I like simple mods and I like Armor Rating Rescaled. It just changes the formula a bit, but the effect is great.

Q: Join the Dawnguard to hunt the vampire menace, or follow the Volkihar Clan into night eternal?

A: I join the Dawnguard. Because the armor is cool!

Q: Stand with the Sons of Skyrim and fight with the Stormcloaks, or bring an end to the "Age of Aggression" with the Imperial Legion?

A: Maybe Stormcloaks because the armor is so cool. No, that's another tough question.

Both sides of the story are right. Whichever I join it, it's what Thalmor wants. It's better to set up a third force and play a coordinating role of politics.

Whether stand by Ulfric or not, he is an interesting character because as a matter of fact he's not confident.

Q: If Todd Howard handed you access to Skyrim and Bethesda's resources and allowed you to change or add one thing to Skyrim, what would it be?

A: The Japanese version and the international version have different executables, so we need to download both to play with the mods. I'd like to have them both to be common. It's a bother.

Q: Thanks for doing this interview tktk1, it was great to have you on! Any final things to say before we end this interview?

A: Wash your hands, first. Take care of your health. That's important right now.

I was sad to see Fore, the author of FNIS, retired. But I have good memories of my interactions with him.

I think it's more fun when someone is passionate about creating, and there's a lot of people involved and support in places you can't see, and there's a story to tell, and if people can feel that part of it. It's made by a human being.
