The Elder Scrolls

Very detailed guide of all kinds of Oblivion tips (complete list of followers, which NPCs may die easily, where to get the best loot)

So this will be a very detailed guide on all kinds of handy Oblivion tips. Took me quite a while to gather all this information, based on lots of experimentation. I figured all these tips out on the latest patch installed version of Oblivion on the Xbox 360, with all DLCs installed. Many of these tips will therefore mostly be for the versions with all official patches installed. I also have a list of all Cyrodiil wilderness cache chests located in the Prima Guide, but due to copyright reasons I think its better to not list those here. They contain pretty worthless loot often though. Anyway, hope you like the following information. Also check out my Oblivion/Skyrim characters on ElderStats where I uploaded them if you're interested: https://www.elderstats.com/members/1693 Without further ado, these will be the tips:

Complete list of all permanent followers in the game:

  • Shadowmere
  • DB Murderer (Imp of Khajiit are the strongest)
  • Adoring Fan
  • Mages Guild follower (of Scholars the Altmer is strongest, of Apprentices the Breton);
  • Battlehorn Castle Man-at-Arms (Castellan Athon is strongest, if he is dead the Redguard);
  • Atronach Familiar (Frost Atronach is strongest)
  • KotN follower (Geimund en Gukimir are strongest in the lowest levels, later Brellin/Areldur, in last levels Sir Avita
  • Dark Seduer or Golden Saint Escort
  • Ushnar’s Skinned Hound
  • Next to summons one can also use the Skull of Corruption, Sanguine´s Rose and a command creature spell/staff/scroll to obtain even more temporary followers. These arent permanent however, but most players dont realize this.

Complete list of NPCs which may easily die in-game! Unofficial Oblivion patches cover many of these, but Im not sure if they cover them all:

Skingrad: Shum gro-Yarug may fall of the Castle bridge (between 10-11 a.m. and 2-3 p.m.), Toutius Sextius as well(9-10/11a.m. and 2-3 p.m.). Shameer may steal food and be killed (on non-rainy days 11-1p.m. and 7-9 p.m.). Graklak gro-Buglump sometimes may die when he is at the West-Weald Inn when he pickpockets due to his low Responsibility and Erthor may die when he travels between his cave and Skingrad (Morndas at 0:00am-2:00am and Tirdas at 0:00am-2:00am).

Bravil: Cosmus the Cheat (just after 6 and 10 p.m), City-Swimmer (just after 12 and 6 p.m.) and Wretched Aia (just after 6 and 10 a.m., 2 and 6 p.m., between 6 and 10 p.m.) when they either fall from the bridge or start stealing. Dro'Nahrahe may end up dying traveling each day (Green Road, between 8 a.m.-midday). Carandial between 2th-4th and 16th-18th outside Anuywyll just northwest of Bravil. Jean-Pierre and Daenlin both may die when hunting on Sunday near Flooded Mine (Daenlin 6-8am and JP 6am-8pm!!)!!

Chorrol: Rimalus Bruiant will fight the dog when both are inside the house (only safely enter his house between 8am and 4pm), Eugal Belette may attack Brother Piner around 12 p.m. when both are inside Chorrol. Sabine Laul may also sometimes die, even though it's uncertain why this happens.

Leyawiin: Countess Alessia Caro and 2 followers may die between 15th of month and several days thereafter when they travel all the way to Chorrol (Imporant since they are part of Sanguine’s quest (she becomes unessential after Ahdarji´s Heirloom!!!)).

Bruma: Ongar the World-Weary and certain other NPCs may start stealing anytime when they are inside Olav´s Tap and Tack. Edla Dark-Heart may kill horses or Humilis Nonius at the Bruma Stable (each weekend between 10-6 p.m.). Honmund travels every weekend to Dragonclaw where he may be killed by the wildlife.

Cheydinhal: Ohtimbar may steal things at the Cheydinhall Bridge Inn and end up dying (noon-2p.m.). Ganredhel may steal end and end up dying inside the Cheydinhal Chapel (6pm-8pm). Ra’qanar steals stuff inside the Guard Barracks (between 5-7p.m.); Oghash gra-Magul may end up dying when she travel between Cheydinhal and the Imperial City (Tirdas) and Walker Camp (Fredas). Talaendril of the Dark Brotherhood travels to Leyawiin every Loredas, and goes back Sundas where she may end up dying. Imperial: Ontus Vaninase may start attacking you when your disposition is too low (he ends up hating very high Mages Guild members). Isleif Open Handed may steal and end up dying in Jair’’s Shack (7-9pm).

Shivering Isles: Big Head starts stealing a fork from Rendil Drarara at Bliss when they both are outside (2pm-8pm). You can end this by stealing the fork yourself. Jayred Ice-Veins wanders 8000 units around the door to the Fringe. Dulphumph gro-Urgash wanders outside Deepwallow where he may be killed by wildlife (11am-5pm). Ahjazda may fall inside her own house. Amiable may steal food after quest in Bliss (noon-2pm and 8-10pm). Brithaur may also possibly steal. There are furthermore some people reporting fights breaking out or NPCs randomly dying (possibly due to fall damage) in New Sheoth after entering trhough the southern Crucible gate between 2-8pm. Yngvar Doom-Sayer is the only traveling NPC in the Shivering Isles.

Wilderness: Torbern (Aerin’’s Camp, far north of Cheydinhal beneath Dive Rock), Tooth-in-the-Sea (north of Bravil, east of Flooded Mine), Bralsa Andaren (near wayshrine between Weatherleah and Nonungalo) and Alawen (Troll Candle Camp between Anvil and Kvatch) are all Master Trainers in the wilderness which may end up dying by wildlife. Be sure to quickly kill all nearby wildlife when coming near to the area they are at.

Dungeon loot:

On average, monster dungeons by far have the best loot in the game. Each single regular non-restoration chest has a 10% chance of obtaining a scroll/spell tome or an enchanted ring, weapon or armor. Every non-ayleid boss chest has 25% chance of an enchanted ring, weapon or armor and 2x 50/100% of a scroll/spell tome. Considering this, personally I find Robbers Glen’s Cave to be pretty much the best cave in the entire game since it has 10 of the non-restoration chests and 1 boss chest, all in 1 zone. However, other great monster dungeons in descending order are Glademist Cave (pre-quest), Mongrel’s Tooth Cave, Reedstand Cave, Bloodmayne Cave, Greenmead Cave, Bramblepoint Cave, Haynote Cave, Hrota Cave, Shadow’s Rest Cave, Crayfish Cave, Sedor, Nonwyll Cavern and Arpenia. The Shivering Isles dont offer as great dungeon averages as Cyrodiil has.

However, if you're looking for a more specific piece of item in the game, its far more efficient to be looking for places where these are easier to get:

For enchanted jewelry/rings:

  • By far the best place in the game is Earil’s shop in Crucible (SI). This shop always has 3 enchanted jewelry/ring items after entering. After this your best bet is a monster dungeon like Robbers Glen’s Cave.

For enchanted weapons:

  • Marauder dungeons for claymore/longsword): Infested Mine 3rd zone: 1.2 enchanted claymore/longsword per try; for example, Robbers Glen’s Cave only has 0.3 chance of having it!
  • Bandits (All blunts): Sercen 1.211 per try, Cursed Mine 3rd zone: 1.286 per try, which are x2.25 more chance on average than Robbers Glen!).
  • Vampires (Blades, (short blades and two-handed): Memorial Cave (2.7 enchanted wapens per visit); Barren Cave exactly 1.9 per visit.
  • Vendors like Khafiz (DLC) and the Imperial Dark Brotherhood murderer spawn with high level weapons every 73 hours after entering their area.
  • The chest in the Fighters Guild after completing the questline may have an average of 0.67 items at the start of every month.
  • Certain NPCs spawn with new enchanted items every new level: All NPCs in Border Watch, every NPC in Blankenmarch, Bravil FG Nahsi (claymore), Bruma FG Bumph gra-Gash (blunt), Arcane University every scholar/apprentice (dagger), every NPC at Brindle Home (blunt), SI Hale Halion, Zoe and Pyke (dagger/shortsword/blade), Wide-Eye SI Bliss (dagger), SI Bliss Tilse (shortsword), Pad-Ei Bliss SI (dagger) and SI Mirili Ulven (dagger).

For enchanted bows and enchanted arrows:

  • Your best chance is trying with Melliwin at the Thieves Den. Simply save your game before entering to restart her inventory. After trying, leave the zone and try again in 73 hours!
  • Olyn at the Molag Bal Shrine and Torbal also spawn with an enchanted bow every level.
  • Memorial Cave and Barren Cave may also yield somewhat good results, but personally I dont think they are as good!
  • For enchanted arrows specifically, other great options are Vajhira at the Hircine Shrine, Meridia’s and Boethiah’s quests, Mraaj-dar and Torbal at Brindle Home.

For all enchanted armor combined:

  • Robbers Glen is probably on average your best bet (1.25 piece per try). However if your looking more specific for either Heavy Armor or Light Armor, its probably better to aim for other dungeons.
  • The Legion Commander’s Chest in the Prison District Imperial Legion Offices spawns both regular armor and weapons (75% of both 2x armor and 2x weapons), and 25% both enchanted magic and armor items after entering every 73 hours.
  • The chest in the Fighters Guild after completing the questline may have an average of 0.67 items at the start of every month.

For enchanted heavy armor:

  • Fort Wooden Hand 2nd zone, Dasek Moor 3rd zone and Fort Cedrian 2nd zone all have 1.4 pieces of enchanted armor per visit (Marauder on average has 0.3 pieces of cuirass/boots/greaves per try, 0.15 of having a shield and .075 of having a helmet/gauntlets).
  • Certain NPCs spawn with new enchanted items every new level: Antus Flonius in Leyawiin FG (HA Cuirass), Fathis Aren and every NPC at Brindle Home.

For enchanted light armor:

  • Sercen 1st Zone (1.475 pieces on average) and Dzonot Cave 2nd zone (1.375 on average) are the best; Black Rock Caverns 2nd and 3rd zone and Rockmilk Cave 2nd zone (1.375 both), are also great choices, even though they are somewhat bigger dungeons. On average a bandit boss has about 1.275 pieces of enchanted light armor per visit (cuirass/boots=0.3, greaves/helmet=.225, shield=.15, gauntlets=.075).
  • Khafiz and Kovan Kren (DLC) also spawn with guaranteed enchanted light armor every 73 hours.
  • Certain NPCs spawn with new enchanted items every new level: all NPCs in Border Watch and Camonna Tong Thug (LA greaves).

For scrolls/spell tomes:

  • Necromancers always spawn with 2 scrolls! However, these always seem to be either level 1 or 6 scrolls (see UESP page for more information). Great places for obtaining these are Fort Istirus (34.3 scrolls on average by going through the dungeons), Fort Linchal (31.4) and Silorn (32, but has 4 zones). The same goes for reliable shops like the Mystic Emporium, Earil’s shop in Crucible (SI) and Tilse’s shop in Bliss (SI). If you want higher leveled scrolls, there are far better options:
  • 2 Necromancer Adepts spawn at Moss Rock Cavern!! (3 higher level scrolls on average close near the entrance (one Adept and two boss chests)! 5 if you also manage to kill the other Adept deeper in the dungeons! Other great choices are the last zone of Echo Cave (4.5 high level scrolls close near the entrance), Fort Rayles 2nd zone (2,75), Sage Glen Hollow (1,75) and Ceyatatar (entering through the trap door in the wilderness (1,25 near the entrance).
  • When finishing Through a Nightmare, Darkly you’ll gain 6 scrolls at the end. If you have the Spell Tome DLC installed, this is by far the most reliable way to get a specific spell tome, since you’ll get on average 1.5 spell tomes. Simply save just before speaking to Henantier after returning to Bravil.
  • A conjurer spawns just outside Fort Cedrian at the middle of the bridge. Save here just before installing the DLC to obtain a specific Spell Tome you desire.
  • The 2nd zone of Fort Rayles has two boss chests which have a high chance of spawning a spell tome. Be sure to enter from the eastern door to access these chests quickly.
  • Ceyatatar also has three boss chests containing high chances of having a spell tome. Be sure to enter from the trapdoor on the outside. After getting the chest, go outside again, save, and then load the save file: the door leading to the rest of the dungeon is now opened. Be sure to also save just before entering the first zone where another easily accessible boss chest is located.

For staves/staffs:

  • There are 55 Greater Staves in the game, (Nether) Liches only Spawn with 25 of these!!! A simple way to obtain these is to simply summon a Lich, then use a corrode weapon spell/scroll/staff on it. This makes it drop its weapon. Or simply encounter these enemies by going through Undead Dungeons. Higher level Dremora also have a 50% of carrying a staff. Some good dungeons are The Old Way, Piukanda, Welke, Wenyandawik, Bawn, Fingerbowl Cave, Rielle, Kemen and SI Ebrocca Zones 1 and 4.
  • Other possibly even greater choices are trying Rindir’s Staffs and Moss Rock Cavern (1.9 staves on average since Adepts may carry some). Other choices are Fort Istirus Zone 3 (1.4), Fort Linchal Zone 3 (1.3), Echo Cave last zone (1.25) and Fort Rayles Zone 2 (0,8).
  • Certain NPCs spawn with a new staff every new level: Lithnilian at the Imperial Bridge Inn, Fathis Aren and Henantier.

For alch equipment:

  • Necromancer/Conjuration dungeons are your best choice (especially since vendors will never spawn with Master quality): Echo Cave last zone (0,9), Zone 3 (1,5), Fort Ontus Zone 2 (1,2); Hame Zone 1 (1,0) ; Elenglynn (0,9); Silorn (0,7) and Moss Rock Cavern (0,7).
  • SI Crystal chests also have 25% of containing alchemy equipment. However, these do not respawn!

For madness matrices (can also always be found on every single Grummite!), from level 9 boss chest chance 0.1, regular 0.0625, Grummites 0.0625. In descending order best choices are:

  • Corpserot Passage, Xeddefen, Knotty Bramble Zones 1 + 3 especially, Blackroot Lair (Grummite) 1st zone, Fetid Grove and Xedilian

For amber matrices (can never be found on Gnar!), from level 9 Hollowed Stump chance 0.3575, boss chest chance 0.125, regular 0.0625. However, Hollowed Stumps/Limbs never respawn!!:

  • Swampgas Hole 1st and 3rd zone, Milchar zone 1 and zone 4, Dire Warren Zone 1 and Zone 2

For oddities (2% of chest containing one):

  • Only good place is Ebrocca Zone 3!! 17 chests in total!!!

For Sheogorath shaped amber:

  • Knotbone Chamber Zone 1 4 right at entrance!!

For random skill books (some skill books are only located in random loot):

  • Magic random skill books are easiest obtained in Fort Rayles, Ceyatatar, Sadarvar Leed, Echo Cave and Silorn.
  • Combat random skill books are easiest obtained in Miscarcand, Infested Mine, Amelions Tomb, Fort Cedrian and Culotte. Also SI Xaselm Zone 2 and 3 and SI Ebrocca Zone 3.
  • Stealth random skill books are easiest obtained in Telepe, North Tunnel Sewers, Bleak Mine, Flooded Mine, Bloodcrust Cavern, Undertow Caverns and Bloodmayne Cave.het beste. Also Nornalhorst, Rockmilk Cave, Onyx Caverns and SI Rotten Den Zone 2 are decent.
  • Certain quest rewards also offer skill books as a reward. Since some can only be obtained through random loot, its best to obtain these as a reward.

There are also certain boss chests located in places which are easily accessed, like being close to the outside door or being in the wilderness. Though these are not the greatest, most reliable and fastest places to obtain specific items, be sure to not overlook these:

  • Miscarcand, Infested Mine, Ceyatatar, Telepe, North Tunnel Sewers, Bleak Mine, Flooded Mine, Gutted Mine, Undertow Caverns, Bloodcrust Caverns, Bloodmayne Cave and SI Rotten Den Zone 2.

There are a lot of boss chests located in the wilderness of the Shivering Isles. These are some of them:

  • Along the western and northwest of The Fringe on the outside are many boss chests!!! About 10 or so! Some do respawn.
  • 5 chests in the exterior of Milchar respawn.
  • Xedilian has a chest under the bridge, to the west, and one to the southeast. These do not respawn!
  • West of the Sheogorath mountain statue are 3 containers, even though these do not respawn!
  • A chest northeast of Hale.
  • One north of Flooded Camp respawns, and there is a chest ten southeast of Swampgas Hole under water.
  • Two underwater chests east of the exit of Fain. There are also two north of there nearby a ruin.

There are also other great places to get certain enchanted items like vendors and NPCs by pickpocketing from them. In higher levels these NPCs will have great weapons and armors since they level with the player:

  • Vendors like Khafiz and the Imperial Dark Brotherhood murderer spawn with high level weapons every 73 hours after entering their area. Khafiz and Kovan Kren also spawn with guaranteed enchanted light armor.
  • The Legion Commander’s Chest in the Prison District Imperial Legion Offices spawns both regular armor and weapons (75% of both 2x armor and 2x weapons), and 25% both enchanted magic and armor items after entering every 73 hours.
  • The chest in the Fighters Guild after completing the questline may have an average of containing 0.67 items at the start of every month.
  • Certain NPCs spawn with new enchanted items every new level: Antus Flonius in Leyawiin FG (HA Cuirass), all NPCs in Border Watch with either LA armor or weapons, every NPC in Blankenmarch, Lithnilian (staff), Fathis Aren (staff and HA armor), Henantier (staff), Bravil FG Nahsi (claymore), Camonna Tong Thug (LA greaves), Bruma FG Bumph gra-Gash (blunt), Arcane University every scholar/apprentice (dagger), Olyn Molag Bal Shrine (bow), every NPC at Brindle Home (HA and blunt), Torbal (bow and arrow), SI Hale Halion, Zoe and Pyke (dagger/shortsword/blade), Wide-Eye SI Bliss (dagger), SI Bliss Tilse (shortsword), Pad-Ei Bliss SI (dagger), SI Mirili Ulven (dagger).
