I have been using other peoples mods for quite a long time now, and I am extremely grateful to the mod authors who spend their time improving the game for authors for no pay. I have utilized their efforts for a very long time, and now I want to give back to the community as well. The issue with that is I'm not a programmer, graphic designer, voice-actor, or really anything special. I know how to utilize other peoples mods, use the majority of modding tools, fix some simple errors in them if needed (such as poorly made/broken nav mapping), but not much else. So, I want to learn. However, it seems like the best strategy is to specialize in one area, rather than trying to do everything. I don't really have a specific specialization in mind yet, so I was hoping to get a few opinions. I expect it will take a pretty long time before I have the skill to publish anything really worthwhile, and by that point, ES6 may have been released. I assume it will eventually be modded as well when the tools release to do so, and I would prefer that the skill I learn be at least somewhat transferable (obviously things will change and it won't be seamless, but I want to avoid relearning the entire thing). So, with that long description out of the way, the important questions I have:
TL;DR – The stuff below this is what I really need answered, the above just gives a little context. If you don't want to read it all but may have insight on the questions, please skip to here.
- Between scripting and item-creation/visuals, which skill would be more transferable to future TES games/other games, in your opinion?
- If I went with scripting, would I be required to learn multiple programming languages, or just Papyrus? (I'm not interested in anything like that for a career, so this would be solely for the purpose of making mods. I don't mind learning 1-2 languages, but after that it seems like it wouldn't make sense, since it is completely unrelated to my career path.)
- Does it even make sense to become a mod author if the skills used in my career don't transfer at all to any of the main subsets of modding? (This is semi-related to the previous question. Essentially, I don't want to learn all the required programming languages/other for becoming a game developer or programmer, just to never use them again in my actual job. It seems like quite a few mod authors (especially scripters) have a background and/or are currently employed in a field that is not terribly different. My main concern is that I:
a. Have zero experience with programming, graphic design, or related fields.
b. Have no use for that knowledge in my own field. It is about as far away as you could get . from tech-related.
I apologize for the long-winded post, I'm just trying to figure out the best way to give back, without learning the skill-set for an entire career completely unrelated to mine. If anyone has input, I would very much appreciate it.
