So I bought The Division 1 a couple weeks ago, and right now I'm level 20 and have completed around half of the New York map, and my god. Graphics are amazing, movement is fluid, menus are streamlined, gameplay is polished, and sound design is on point.

But this has got to be the most generic game I've ever sunk so many hours into. Without the Covid pandemic there's no chance in hell I'd ever be playing this. I've spent 24 hours playing with little to nothing to show for it. The story is boring, the setting seemed interesting in the beginning, but Ubisoft didn't manage to do anything with it.

The streets are barren, the dialogue is so generic it makes me want to stab my eardrums, and the overall philosophy of the whole game seems to want to appeal to the lowest common denominator of gamers. You know, the people who don't actually play games outside GTA, Red Dead Redemption, or FIFA. The Divison feels like the "risky" game these people would purchase, because everything seems tailored to them. The weapons are literally copy-pasted from the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series, the enemies are bullet sponges like in Destiny, and the loot as usual replaces any depth the game could have had.

Because that's all the game is, a looter shooter. Loot is now the focus point of this generation. Who needs good stories when you can force people to waste their lives away repeating the same actions over and over and over and over and over and over and over again? Chasing after the same shit they already have but with different numbers. I tried the formula with Destiny and that game only worked because of its Strikes playlist; everything else sucked, from the story to the multiplayer to the DLC.

But the Divison has nothing, and I'm sick of having to pump 40+ hours of my life just to get to the "end game" of these stupid looter-type games. I'm sick of this stuff. What a sorry excuse of game design, what a terrible alternative to the compelling and masterfully crafted work I've seen expressed through single-player campagins. This whole looter-shooter genre is the bane of inspired storytelling, it's the death of risky game design, it's the end of compelling narratives.

I wasn't expecting much out of The Division going in (that's why I had never purchased the game), and yet I still came out sorely disappointed. I feel sorry for people whose first gaming experience occurs through this dull looter genre of gaming.
