In so many total wars now, there are far, far too often bugs that largely warp the whole diplomatic playstyle of players who have been punished before.
All Veteran players can tell you: Never, Ever get military alliances, don't get too many defensive alliances, don't get too many vassals, or some would say, ANY Vassals.
Why is that?
In Troy, 3K and to a degree Warhammer, there is a plethora of bizarre diplomacy actions that result in the general fucking of a players campaign.
RELIABILITY: Reliability is a mechanic used to make a player act honestly with the AI in terms of diplomacy. Its really smart in theory, but in practice, absurd situations occur.
The problem is, if ANYTHING fucky happens, and the players reliability is affected, it results in the severing of ties with the player by the AI, Vassal result, unwillingness to do diplomacy and all kinds of problems, even when its not the players fault.
Military ally declares war on YOUR VASSAL? Your fault. Oh and your other vassals betray you for defending one of them, because you are now "unreliable".
Player is forced to choose between two diplomatic allies? Both of them now sever ties with you, because unreliable. Or worse, they make amends, then both wardec YOU because YOU are now Treacherous, where even if they don't like each other, they can defend each other.
AI asks for peace, then IMMEDIATELY raids you lands? Of OBVIOUSly encamps right next to your city? Too bad, no way to tell them to fuck off, looks like you are eating the reliability bullet again, and getting dogpiled by the whole campaign map.
There are countless other issues like this. But my point is, CA, PLEASE if you are reading this, Prioritise fixing the treachery system if every modern total war game. The reason players are acting like murderhobos is because of these rampant bugs and penitential and unfair diplomatic situations are fucking over whole, hard fought campaigns, and its making players isolationist and unwilling to trust the AI.
Its obvious that CA wants to push alliances and Vassalage and other Indirect Control systems as interesting mid-late game empire management. But they HAVE to fix it and make it playable and enjoyable.
- Common-sense fixes to diplomacy
- I had two Military Allies declare war on each other some fifty something turns ago, and now I can’t get my reliability up again
- You are playing TW-Troy wrong. Advancements in diplomatic alliances. Don’t play this like previous TW.
